The black colleges admission process can be a daunting task. There are so many different deadlines, things to do and steps to follow families get overwhelmed. To avoid getting lost in the process families could benefit from an overview. Here is a general college calendar to follow.
Before you start the process you want to make sure you check the specific deadlines for each school that interests your child.
October - February: Complete the Financial Aid Forms- CSS Profile (required by approximately 400 private colleges) has different deadlines for each school and or Free Application for Federal student Aid (FAFSA) can begin submitting January 1st of your child's senior year.
October - February: Apply for admission
Mid December: Notification of early action/early decision.
Special note: Early Action is when you apply early to multiple black colleges for an opportunity to get an early admission decision. Early Decision is when you apply to only one college for an opportunity to get an early admission decision. When applying early decision, if the college accepts you to its institution a binding contract is established and you must attend the college. Early Decision is not recommended if financial aid is an issue and you want to compare other college offers.
January: Submit FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA Verification Form (required for students attending California Colleges). Check on housing application deadlines.
March & April: Notification for regular action from colleges. Sometimes colleges will notify students as early as December regarding admission decisions.
March - May: Send additional information to colleges (copies of tax returns and other forms) and make college visits if you have not already done so.
April: Receive financial aid award letters from colleges
